The World Championship of Custom Bike Building had a week of firsts during its seventh year holding the competition at the Sturgis motorcycle rally.
It’s the first time that the American Motorcycle Dealers world championship trophy has gone to a bike with a Harley-Davidson engine.
Krugger Motorcycles of Belgium won the honor on a day with many first-time winners and participants.
The Krugger motorcycle took first place at the World Championships of Custom Bike Building on Wednesday in Sturgis.
Builder Freddie Krugger took home a trophy, a champion’s ring valued at $10,000 and — as the first Harley engine winner — Harley-Davidson kicked in a 2011 128-inch Screaming Eagle engine.
Krugger has taken third place three times in the past six years before taking the top prize at the 2010 competition.
Other firsts included an entry from Belarus. Yuri Shif not only won the metric division, but placed third in the freestyle division with his bike “The Machine.”
The metric division had only one entry, so bikes entered in the freestyle class with a metric engine were eligible for the class.
That also included Speed Shop Design’s “Beezerker,” with its BSA 650 engine. Chris Flechtner’s shop is based in Seattle.
Another first came in the Modified Harley class. In the previous seven years of the world championships, no Harley dealer had ever won the division and no shop from England had won.
That changed with Shaw Harley-Davidson of England taking first place in the class.
First place in the Production Manufacturer class went to Sbay Motorcycle Company of Spain.
